Matt Parkhouse’s Journey in Private Client: A Six-Month Training Experience

Posted On 05 March 2025 by Matt Parkhouse
As my seat Private Client comes to an end, it’s time for some reflection.
What I’ve Loved
Where did Private Client win me over? The drafting. The more complex, the better! There’s something fulfilling about putting together a Will or a Trust that perfectly reflects a client’s wishes, while making sure it legally stands up.
I also loved the holistic approach to estate planning. Really listening to clients, understanding their concerns, and providing tailored solutions. It’s not a tick box exercise. Rather, it’s about problem-solving and predicting future risks.
What about the best part? Being able to be myself. Private Client is about relationships. Whether that be with the clients or my team. I got to bring my personality into meetings and have a laugh with clients, whilst helping them achieve their goals.
The Surprises
Private Client was far more varied than I expected. It’s not just Wills and Probate. It’s Trusts, Tax, and Powers of Attorney matters. Every day was different and keeping on top of everything meant mastering the fine art of plate-spinning!
People may assume Private Client is somewhat leisurely. Nevertheless, we are dealing with long-term planning, right? Wrong. There was never a dull moment, with constant deadlines, urgent capacity assessments, and clients needing advice yesterday.
Alongside Private Client
In addition to my work in Private Client, I have recently undertaken the Solicitors Qualifying Examination 2. Despite the long hours and the hard graft, it has been a great opportunity to apply the textbook in practice.
What I’ve Learned
Working in law is not just about memorising cases or regurgitating statutes. It’s about applying it in a way that provides practical advice to help a client meet their objectives. Developing this practical mindset was not only beneficial during my time in Private Client but it will also be invaluable during life as a soon-to-be qualified solicitor.
Final Thoughts
I leave Private Client with a newfound appreciation for how broad the area of law is, as well as a new set of skills.
I now look forward to what development opportunities and challenges that my final seat, Commercial Property, will bring over the next six months.
