Becky Palmer takes part in parachute jump to raise monies for MIND

24 March, 2009

Pardoes employee Becky Palmer, aged 25, braved heights of 15,000 ft in a tandem parachute jump to raise money for MIND charity.

After receiving an email asking for willing volunteers, Becky “jumped” at the chance to bravely do the skydive, not only raising money for charity, but also accomplishing one of her tasks on her “things to do before I die” list.

Arriving at Dunkeswell airfield initially on the 2nd February, due to the horrendous weather conditions, her jump was cancelled. However, a few weeks later on the 8th March Becky travelled up again, mother and boyfriend in tow, for her second attempt. Luckily, the weather proved in her favour and she was able to successfully complete her tandem skydive. On the day she was offered the chance to jump at an extra 5,000 ft from 10,000ft to 15,000 ft for an extra £50.00. This gave her an extra 60 seconds of freefall before the parachute opened. Becky comments:

"Before I knew it I was freefalling. It was amazing. I don’t remember much but it was a great feeling. Then after about 1 minute of freefall the parachute opened. It was so peaceful and the sights were amazing”.

Becky has so far raised a total of £400.00 for MIND, who are a mental health charity who provide an information service, legal advice, and campaigning and policy work concerning the rights of people who experience mental distress.
