Failure to Diagnose

A substantial number of clinical negligence claims concern the failure to diagnose or delay in diagnosing medical conditions such as cancer, meningitis and congenital conditions such a hip dysplasia.

Early detection and prompt treatment of a condition can dramatically improve someone's quality of life, the treatment they have to undergo and their chance of survival.  It can also dramatically reduce the complications and pain and suffering involved in some types of treatment.  For example, early diagnosis can result in there being less need for radiation/chemotherapy treatment.

Common mistakes include:-
  • Failing to realise the importance of a patient's symptoms and complaints
  • Wrongly interpreting test results and x-rays
  • Failing to refer patient to a specialist
  • Losing records
  • Inaccurate test results
  • Wrong diagnosis
