Time to start thinking about your annual appraisal?
Posted on 11 February 2013
Is it that time again? We often hear managers say when it’s time to conduct an employee appraisal. So why do managers and employees dread this process so much? The manager may be uncomfortable as they know they may have to justify their opinions with specific examples when an employee asks. They also may lack skill in providing feedback and the employee, whose performance is under review, can become defensive. Consequently, managers avoid giving honest feedback which defeats the purpose of the performance appraisal.
If they are so painful then why conduct appraisals? They do offer a means of discussing, planning and reviewing performance of each employee and regular appraisals help employees clearly understand their responsibilities, provide criteria by which their performance is evaluated and suggest ways in which they can improve performance. They can also help identify employees with potential for advancement within the company.
If your organisation reviewed their own performance appraisals system is there a good chance they would gain a ‘does not meet expectations’ rating? Pardoes Bevins can help you in a number of ways. We can:
- Assist you in designing a company appraisal process applicable to your needs
- Design a training course specifically for your company and train your managers on-site
- Conduct generic appraisal training.
