Power of Attorney refund scheme
Posted on 14 February 2018 by Leanne Routledge
Last year the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) announced they will be rolling out a refund scheme for anyone that registered a Lasting or Enduring Power of Attorney between the 1 April 2013 and 31 March 2017.
Since Lasting Powers of Attorney were launched in 2008 the OPG’s registration procedure has become more efficient and its operating costs have reduced. Therefore, the previous registration fee of £110 per form led to the OPG making a profit.
From 1 April 2017 the Office of the Public Guardian reduced the registration fee from £110 to £82 and there will be no refund due to anyone that registered a Lasting Power of Attorney after this date.
Anyone that registered a Lasting Power of Attorney between 1 April 2013 and 31 March 2017 will need to contact the OPG to claim their refund. An Attorney or the Donor of the Lasting or Enduring Power of Attorney can apply for the refund.
The refund scheme is available online or by telephone. The OPG’s contact telephone number is 0300 456 0300 (option 6), this will put you directly through to the refund team who will be able to help you complete the paperwork necessary to receive a refund. You can also claim a refund online by visiting the www.gov.uk/power-of-attorney-refund.
The refund will be calculated based on when you registered your Lasting or Enduring Power of Attorney and will include 0.5% interest.
It can take up to 12 weeks for the claim to be processed and if you have provided your bank details the repayment will be paid directly into your bank account.
