Paul specialises in criminal defence work. He is passionate about human rights, particularly where mental health issues are involved. He has developed a special understanding of Autistic Spectrum disorders, often present but unidentified in criminal cases. For some clients he has even assisted in obtaining essential diagnoses and treatments.
Paul has gained Higher Rights of Audience for Criminal Proceedings, which he exercises in the Crown Courts on a regular basis, representing clients for some of the most serious criminal offences.
He decided to become a criminal lawyer at the age of 12, and initially qualified as a barrister in 1983 and held senior posts both as a Magistrates Court Clerk and then as a Prosecutor. In 1993, he took a sabbatical for a few years in Brittany, perfecting French and working, amongst other things as a translator and English tutor. This time enabled him to gain a greater understanding than normal in areas such as Road Traffic Act law as well as dealing with a large selection of murder, rape and fraud cases.
He has occasionally been able to use his French with clients and is looking to develop areas where his language skills can link to legal skills. This is to offer a more complete service to clients both in England and abroad.
In his free time, his life revolves mainly around a large number of rescued animals. They include cats, pigs and goats, that he and his wife have accumulated and now number more than fifty. Music and writing are also major interests.
